What Hanley shoppers wore in 2008, from trendy belts to Versace bags
Over the years, The Sentinel has run the popular ‘Street Style’ fashion item where we strolled and talked to stylish people on the streets of North Staffordshire.
Each week we visited a different local spot, and in September 2008 our photographer went to Hanley.
Thirteen years ago, downtown shoppers were inspired by Madonna, Sienna Miller and Rachel Bilson of The OC.

Spot someone you recognize?
Leah Brough, a 19-year-old nursing student at the University of Chester, Congleton
Where did you get your clothes from? I bought my boots and jeans from Dorothy Perkins last year. They cost around £ 90 all together. My sweater was £ 55 at Warehouse last Christmas and my scarf was £ 2.50 at Primark six months ago. I’ve had my white top for a while, but I can’t remember where it came from or how much it cost. My bag was a birthday present last November and my necklace was £ 10 from Wallis earlier in the year.
Which celebrity do you think looks good? I think Madonna still looks good.
What is your favorite store and why? I don’t really have a favorite, I just buy anywhere.
Catherine Moseley, a 42-year-old mobile hairdresser, from Kidsgrove
Where did you get your clothes from? I got my pumps from Primark for £ 4 in the summer. My pants were £ 30 at Next last week and my top was £ 6 at New Look last month. My bag is Versace and was a gift from Dubai two months ago.
Which celebrity do you think looks good? I like to browse fashion magazines but I don’t notice anyone in particular.
What is your favorite store and why? I love Warehouse and H&M because of the clothes and the price.
Hayley Ward, a 44-year-old midwife from Kidsgrove
Where did you get your clothes from? My boots cost £ 25 at Freeport last year. My jeans were £ 16 at Peacocks last week and my belt was £ 10 at Next last year. My top was around £ 4 from River Island last year and my cardigan was £ 8 from Primark two weeks ago. I got my bag from Next two years ago for £ 25 and my scarf was £ 5 from George in Asda three weeks ago.
Which celebrity do you think looks good? I really don’t notice anyone in particular.
What is your favorite store and why? I like the range and the price of Next clothes.

Rachel Heath, a 20-year-old University of Nottingham medical student from Newcastle
Where did you get your clothes from? Most of what I wear is from River Island. I bought my shoes there last month and they cost £ 40. My jeans were also from River Island and cost £ 30 six months ago. I can’t remember the price of my top, but I bought it earlier this year. My bag was £ 30 at Warehouse two months ago and my vest was £ 10 at Next last year, but it’s part of a set.
Which celebrity do you think looks good? Rachel Bilson.
What is your favorite store and why? River Island because they have great clothes at a great price.
Jess Jervis, 19, English Literature student at Sheffield University, from Congleton
Where did you get your clothes from? My shoes were £ 8 at H&M in June and my jeans were around £ 45 at Topshop at Christmas. My white top was £ 5 from London in the summer, and my bag and scarf came from Mallorca last month. I think the bag was around £ 30 and the scarf £ 8. My cardigan was £ 15 at H&M two years ago.
Which celebrity do you think looks good? Edie sedgwick
What is your favorite store and why? Topshop because they have the choice between normal and iconic clothing.
Shelley Carter, 20, geography and sociology student at Chester University in Congleton
Where did you get your clothes from? My boots were £ 45 at Dorothy Perkins in January. My jeans were from a store in Leek and cost £ 60. I bought my sweater from Primark last month for £ 8 and my jacket, which was £ 12, in June. My belt is from Dorothy Perkins and cost around £ 8. My bag was £ 30 at Topshop and my jewelry was a birthday present last week.

What is your favorite store and why? I get everything from River Island.
