Newcastle United’s alarming record in their last 15 games against Liverpool
It’s no surprise that Newcastle United have struggled against the best clubs in the Premier League since their success in the early 2000s. This poor form against elite opposition absolutely includes Liverpool, who have dominated Newcastle in recent years.
In the last 15 appearances between the clubs, all coming in the Premier League, Newcastle United have won only twice. It dropped their all-time record against the Reds to 50 wins, 43 draws and 87 losses.
Newcastle’s most recent win in the series came in 2015 when they capitalized on an own own goal and a goal from current Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum in a 2-0 victory. The year before, Ayoze Perez provided the only score in a 1-0 NUFC victory.
In December, Newcastle got a goalless draw at home. Karl Darlow made four big saves and Fabian Schar had a second half clearance to rule out Liverpool. It was a surprising result at the time due to Newcastle’s recent fights and Liverpool’s attack.
Newcastle United have won just two of their last 15 games against Liverpool.
Ahead of the scoreless stalemate in December, Newcastle had lost six straight games to the Reds. In those back-to-back defeats, Liverpool have scored 15 goals while Newcastle have collected just four. After facing the Reds up close in Game 2 of the 2018-19 season, the NUFC suffered two 3-1 losses last season.
This weekend, Steve Bruce and the Magpies will seek to reverse that trend against a potentially distracted Liverpool club.
As a manager, Bruce has faced Liverpool 28 times. In these matches, his club wear a 6-10-12 record and they have never beaten Jurgen Klopp in their three meetings. Klopp’s only loss to Newcastle was in the December 2015 game.
