Cam Newton: Julian Edelman “is better” and “in a good mood”; Patriots WR is eligible to return this week
After three weeks on the set, Julian Edelman is eligible to return to the practice range this week. The wide receiver underwent knee surgery last month and was placed on the injured reserve, but in his appearance on The Greg Hill Show On Monday morning, Cam Newton said Edelman was going in the right direction.
“I can confirm that he is better. He’s recovering, ”Newton said. “It’s good, man. Just to see him in a good mood and to know that we are doing our work as a team so that when he returns it is obvious that he will have some help in this position. We just need him to be healthy. We need him to have the same steeze style he always had. But now a little healthier, he is now able to unravel without necessarily thinking. I think that’s all he wanted and I think that’s all we wanted as a team.
“Julian Edelman is obviously the pinnacle, I would say someone who’s been in Mount Rushmore of Patriots history over the years for everything he’s done and what he stands for as a player. So I am just anticipating the day of his return.
In Edelman’s absence, Jakobi Meyers stepped up his efforts.
Meyers had 23 passes for 286 yards in three games without the veteran. Another college quarterback, Meyers also threw a touchdown pass in anger for the Ravens. After effusively praising Meyers, Newton was asked if it was sort of “Julian Edelman who?”
“No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! Stop it, Newton replied.” Don’t say that. Nah! No! It’s bad! No no! Don’t say that!
Behind the scenes, Edelman certainly helped Meyers succeed.
“He certainly played a big role during my time here as the Patriot. He pretty much gives me the answers on the test, honestly, ”Meyers said on a video conference last week. “All I have to do is watch him, what he’s done and add my own course technique or my own little detail. It works. He gives me the answers to the test and combines that with great coaching, I feel ready to go every day and compete to the best of my ability.
